Telstra Demos Broadcast LTE Based on MCPTT Standard

Telstra, Ericsson and Motorola Solutions delivered what they called the world’s first Long Term Evolution (LTE) broadcast-enabled push to talk (PTT) on Telstra’s live LTE network. The network used technology based on the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 13 mission-critical PTT (MCPTT) standard.

Telstra can deliver the service on its LTE Advanced Network for Emergency Services (LANES). Telstra launched the LANES emergency service, including voice over LTE (VoLTE) for public safety, in 2016. The companies will undertake further network trials this year, and commercial services are planned to be available from 2018.

The technology will extend the capabilities of LANES to provide PTT services with prioritized access to Telstra’s LTE network and preferential data treatment once on that network, working with and complementing existing mission-critical LMR networks.

Telstra’s LTE Broadcast capability allows PTT group calls to be delivered simultaneously to all members of a group call with high assurance, low latency and separated from regular mobile traffic, a statement said. The technology is viewed as complementary to existing highly secure and available mission-critical LMR services and can cost effectively extend assured PTT service to a greater number of users via mobile devices.

The successful LTE broadcast-enabled PTT call was made possible with Ericsson’s network infrastructure, Motorola Solutions’ WAVE PTT platform, Qualcomm Technologies’ LTE broadcast supported Snapdragon platform used in Motorola’s LTE devices, and Telstra’s network.

“With this world-first LTE broadcast-enabled PTT call, we have shown that our LANES network can provide reliable prioritized communications to both public-safety agencies and business customers with critical communications needs,” said Mike Wright, Telstra group managing director, networks. “PTT is part of Telstra's LANES roadmap for our public-safety customers and complements the data and voice over LTE (VoLTE) services already available using this world-leading technology.”

The solution delivers critical communications capabilities including optimized PTT latency, flexible talkgroup management and call pre-emption for LTE devices. The use of LTE broadcast allows faster call setup times, reduced PTT latency and efficient downlink bandwidths for group PTT calls. The teams will continue to develop the full 3GPP MCPTT Release 13 and 14 capabilities and undertake network testing to optimize performance and measure key metrics such as coverage, latency and capacity.

“While mission-critical LMR systems will continue to provide the critical means of frontline communications for many years to come, this new 3GPP-based technology provides an excellent way of extending the reach of LMR networks to many more technology users, regardless of whether they communicate with a smartphone, hardened device or a desktop computer,” said Bruce Brda, executive vice president products and services with Motorola Solutions.

Last year, Finnish firm Bittium, which develops public-safety smartphones, partnered with French company Expway to offer what the companies called the first LTE broadcast-enabled mobile devices. The commercially available devices enable clear and scalable PTT, uninterrupted high-definition push to video and error-free large file delivery for the mission-critical communications market.
