Tachyon Launches Broadband Satellite Service in Southwest Asia (3/2/10)
Tachyon Networks announced a new fixed and mobile broadband satellite communications service for Southwest Asia, including Afghanistan. The solution includes high-power capacity, ground-based infrastructure, ultra-small aperture terminal (USAT) equipment and managed network services operating in its Ku-band beams, achieving mobile data rates of 512 kilobits per second (kbps) moving to 2.8 Megabits per second (Mbps).
Tachyon acquired the Intelsat IS-24 spacecraft, moving it from 4 degrees W to 47.3 degrees E and placing it into an inclined orbit. The service is targeted at communications on the move (COTM) in Southwest Asia.
“Tachyon is extremely pleased to be able to offer this new ultra high performance satellite capacity that is uniquely suited to aeronautical broadband applications such as high-definition full-motion video for airborne COTM,” said Peter Carides, CEO of Tachyon.
Along with the space segment capacity and service, Tachyon offers engineering services and ground-based infrastructure to address current and future custom communications needs globally. Rounding out the end-to-end system, Tachyon supplies terminals supporting data, voice and full-motion HD video connectivity for highly mobile applications.
