West Yorkshire Police Contracts with Handheld PCs (3/3/10)
Handheld PCs won a contract with West Yorkshire Police to provide its hand-e-pix solution. The system enables the force to improve its ability to capture and manage photographs used for evidence.
During 2007 – 2008, the Home Office allocated £80 million (US$121 million) of funding to support the delivery of handheld computers to frontline police officers for the next three years. The funding was provided to free police time and make the police service more efficient. It is expected that 30,000 officers will benefit by this month.
West Yorkshire Police, the fourth-largest Force in England and Wales, provides policing to 2.1 million residents across 780 square miles covering the metropolitan boroughs of Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees.
Using existing BlackBerry smart phones issued to frontline officers, West Yorkshire Police use the software to capture time, date and GPS location-stamped images. Officers can categorize and add additional notes to the photos, which in turn, enable back-office staff to sort, search and analyze the images and data. Examples of images captured include traffic violations, house searches, licensing visits, graffiti and injuries from assaults.
