Rural Cellular Association Supports D Block Auction (7/20/10)
Rural Cellular Association (RCA) supported the FCC’s plan to auction the 700 MHz D block in a wireless strategy paper filed July 19 in association with U.S. Cellular, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile USA and others. RCA continues to call on the FCC to mandate interoperability across all paired bands of 700 MHz spectrum to maximize the use of spectrum and help create a nationwide, interoperable public-safety broadband network.
“RCA members strongly support public safety and do so especially in areas of the United States that are the most difficult to deploy and service,” said RCA President and CEO Steven K. Berry. “The FCC’s recommendation to use private-sector and public-safety resources is the most spectrally efficient and effective way to ensure that consumers in rural areas have robust service, and public safety will benefit from competitive prices. Auctioning the D block will bring more choices to public safety and will help bring interoperability between and among all paired bands of 700 MHz spectrum.”
Berry said the technical paper answers many questions about why an auction makes sense for both public-safety and small and regional commercial carriers. “We are hopeful that public safety will recognize that a D block auction will help deliver a working network with the coverage and capacity that they so desperately need,” he said.
Most public-safety associations have asked the FCC to reallocate the D block spectrum to public safety instead of auctioning it.
