Harris Gains $18M Order from Army for Multiband Radios (7/22/10)
Harris received a $17.6 million order from the U.S. Department of Defense for multiband handheld radio systems and accessories. The order was awarded by the Joint Program Executive Office of the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) on behalf of the U.S. Army.
The Army is acquiring the radios to provide soldiers with advanced handheld communications capabilities for portable line-of-sight and beyond line-of-sight applications. The radio also serves as the dismountable transceiver in the vehicular amplifier adapter system.
Houston-based oil and gas company Black Elk Energy is upgrading its offshore communications capabilities with a fully managed broadband satellite solution from Hughes Network Systems to improve the safety, efficiency and profitability of its Gulf of Mexico operations. Hughes and Environmental and Safety Systems International (ESSI) are equipping Black Elk-operated production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico with HX broadband satellite routers and providing high-speed Internet, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), Wi-Fi, fax and VHF radio backhaul services.
Black Elk Energy is focusing on clean-burning natural gas. The Black Elk business model requires highly reliable communications to support automated systems that increase operational efficiencies. "Fast and reliable communications services keep us continuously connected to our platforms and their critical field data. That translates into a safer work environment and more efficient production for us and our partners," said David Cantu, vice president of IT at Black Elk Energy.
