IAFC Asks Senate for Quick Passage of McCain Legislation (7/23/10)
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) called on the U.S. Senate to quickly approve the First Responders Protection Act. The legislation, introduced by Sen. Joseph Lieberman and John McCain earlier this week, would direct the FCC to allocate the D block to public safety and authorizes funding to build and maintain a nationwide, interoperable, public-safety broadband network.
The Lieberman/McCain legislation serves as a companion to legislation introduced earlier this year by Reps. Peter King and Yvette Clarke. That legislation, the Broadband for First Responders Act of 2010 (H.R. 5081), would allocate D block spectrum to public safety for the development of a national, interoperable, public-safety broadband network. The House version doesn’t include a funding mechanism, but the Senate version does.
The IACP urges the House and Senate to act quickly on both public-safety bills. Law enforcement and public safety must have a minimum of 20 megahertz of broadband spectrum to meet current and future needs and must have access to new technologies to perform increasingly complex duties, said an association statement.
