FCC Extends Comment Period in Broadband Network Survivability Notice (7/23/10)
The FCC extended the date for comments until Sept. 3 for its notice of inquiry regarding the state of survivability of broadband communications networks. Reply comments for the PS Docket No. 10-92 notice originally were due July 26.

The proceeding’s goal is to explore potential measures to reduce network vulnerability to failures in network equipment or severe overload conditions, such as would occur in natural disasters, pandemics, and other disasters or events that would restrain the ability to communicate.

On July 19, the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System submitted a letter applauding the commission’s efforts in this proceeding and requesting that additional time be offered to respond to the notice so that all interested stakeholders would have an opportunity to provide input in this proceeding.

“We find that providing the requested limited extension would be beneficial to the development of a complete record on the issues and that granting the extension of time requested by the Federal Reserve will serve the public interest,” FCC officials said.

Few comments from public-safety agencies had been submitted at press time.
