NLC Applauds Senate Efforts to Support Public Safety (7/23/10)
Donald J. Borut, executive director of the National League of Cities (NLC), released the following statement supporting Senate efforts to allocate the 700 MHz D block of spectrum to public safety:

“The NLC applauds Sens. Joe Lieberman and John McCain for introducing the First Responders Protection Act of 2010, legislation that would direct the FCC to allocate 10 megahertz of spectrum, known as the D block, to public safety. By reallocating the D block, Congress would double the spectrum available to build a nationwide public-safety interoperable mobile broadband network, ensuring our first responders will receive the information they need when disaster strikes.”

The NLC also applauded Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who this week announced his intentions to introduce the Public Safety Spectrum and Wireless Innovation Act. “Sen. Rockefeller’s legislation will seek to create innovative spectrum policy, as well as also allocating the D block to public safety and providing the necessary funding to create and implement the interoperable broadband network for public safety,” the statement said. “The NLC looks forward to working with Sens. Lieberman, McCain and Rockefeller to make sure this important legislation becomes a reality.”
